Introducing Our Department!

thumb

On behalf of all our staff and students in the Department of Building and Civil Engineering at the Kabete National polytechnic I am pleased to welcome you to our web page. The Department of Building and Civil Engineering currently offers a wide range of academic programmes at Level 6 (diploma) and Level 5 (certificate). To equip trainees with the ability of applying theory to practice, research and disseminate knowledge, we train using the CBET curriculum. Our programmes are designed to enable students develop core competencies, acquire problem-solving skills, and prepare for related work environment in the best possible way. The Department also offers a wide range of short courses as a means of providing access to knowledge in the areas of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on modular basis. The approach we take on training and learning include curriculum designed to promote production of competent graduates with hands-on skills. Our graduates are equipped with strong analytical capabilities, the latest in cutting-edge technologies, and the skills for innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership.

INSIGHT ON VARIOUS COURSES IN THE DEPARTMENT
i. Architectural Design - Level 6
Architecture is about the making of places where people spend their lives. Architects are not just concerned with the exterior and interior design of a building, but the environment as a whole. Architecture is mostly about human beings living in a “better” way then before. Social sciences and psychology is as important as nanotechnology and sustainable materials…
ii. Quantity Surveying - Level 6
Quantity Surveying is a profession of Quantity Surveyors or Construction Cost managers. Competence in Mathematics, Engineering sciences, construction law, environmental science, construction technology, Technical drawings/construction designs, Estimating , procurement strategy/tendering processes, risk management, contract administration, cost management amongst others are the subject areas that equipped someone to be able to practice quantity surveying competently. Therefore, a prospective quantity surveyor must be familiar with ordinary level subject area that prepares him or her to study some of the listed competencies above in higher institutions.
iii. Land Surveying - Diploma Level 6 and Certificate Level 5
Land surveying involves measuring and mapping the world around us using mathematics, advanced software and equipment. Surveyors calculate just about anything in the ground, in the sky or in the bottom of the sea. Also, polar ice caps are measured. Land surveyors are employed both in the office and in the field. They use the highest technology in the field, like high-order GPS and aerial and terrestrial scanners for mapping, compute and take pictures as evidence. Surveyors are employed on a variety of projects ranging from land development and mining discovery to tunnel building and major construction, ensuring that no two days are the same. They are experts in measuring and determining land size. They also provide advice and information to help designers, architects and developers in their work.
iv. Building Technology
Building technology is the application of technology to the design and construction of buildings. It is a component of architecture and building engineering and is sometimes viewed as a distinct discipline or sub-category.Building technology is related to the different elements of a building and their interactions; it is closely aligned with advances in building science It will cover the use of construction drawings, scales, orthographic views, symbols, sections, and graphical interpretation, specific to the building construction industry to include structural steel detailing, reinforced concrete detailing, masonry sections, wood sections, and schedules for interior finishes and accessories

v. Civil Engineering
If you study civil engineering at diploma level, you’ll learn to apply mathematics and scientific knowledge (particularly physics) to real-life situations and problems that arise from creating and maintaining structures, taking into account environmental, financial, legal and ethical considerations. At its core, civil engineering is a combination of many scientific specialisms, including mechanics, hydraulics, geotechnics (using knowledge of the earth’s crust to solve construction problems), materials science and statistical analysis. As well as the more scientific side, those who study civil engineering will get to develop their design skills, particularly computer-aided design. Project work is central to the subject, meaning that in the latter years of your diploma you will be able to complete your own design projects individually or within a team.

INTEGRATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN TRAINING AND MONITORING TRAINEES PROGRESS.
The department has continuously advocated and encouraged the trainers to adopt technology in the dissemination of curriculum and other operations in the department. As a result trainers have adopted use of Projector, Video, Teaching aids etc in research and training. Leveraging on current technology. The department in partnership with Measurement Systems Ltd offered free training to trainees on the following topics:
i. Engineering technological trends on modern surveying and mapping equipment including Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Continuous Operating Reference Stations (CORS) network.
ii. Use of CORS networks and configuration with any RTK system.
iii. RTK and CORS field demonstration.
The department thanks Measurement Systems Ltd on behalf of KNP for their contribution.
EXHIBITHIONS
The department has actively participated in various exhibitions in the polytechnic eg TVET Fairs, Graduation Ceremonies, Internal Research conferences, Skills and Innovation shows etc where we show cased various trainees works produced during training. The department has identified various Income Generating Activities that are in the process of patenting to allow mass production and commercialization. Page 5 of 10 KNP is ISO 2009:2015 Certified
CONCLUSSION
The Department appreciates the support it has received from the Council and the Polytechnics Management Board, Academic Board and promises to continue striving hard to become one of the leading and best managed department at Kabete National Polytechnic
