ESTABLISHMENT

In the year 2016, through the Legal Notice No. 92, Kabete Technical Training Institute was upgraded to a National Polytechnic Status with the name The Kabete National Polytechnic through a Legal Notice No.92 in exercise of the powers conferred on the Cabinet Secretary of Education in accordance with The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act (TVET) No.29 of 2013; the basis under which the Polytechnic derives its mandate.

BACKGROUND

Kabete National Polytechnic has a rich history that dates back to 1924 when the colonial Government started it as a Native Industry Training Depot. It was later converted to a recruiting barracks for soldiers during the 2nd World war (1939 – 1945) after which the institute reverted to a school that offered three years of Trade courses for Primary Levels Education. Later when Kenya attained independence, it was converted to a National Technical Secondary School known as Kabete Technical High School which admitted form one students who emerged as outstanding performers in the Certificate of Primary Examination (CPE) series from across the Country. It also admitted to form 3, students from what used to be referred to as Grammar Secondary School, to pursue trade areas such as plumbing, electrical, and mechanical as a gateway to joining technical colleges. With the change in Education System in 1985 from 7-4-2-3 to 8-4-4 system, the National Technical Secondary Schools were converted to Technical Training Institutes thereby Kabete Technical High School became known as Kabete Technical Training Institute and was mandated to train Trade Test, Artisan, Certificate and Diploma programs such as Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical and Electronics, Civil Engineering and Business Courses for the standard eight and form four leavers of the 8-4-4 system of Education. The objective was to instill skills to the trainees that would enable them to be either self-employed or join salaried employed in public and private sector as skilled technical personnel. Kabete National Polytechnic is ISO 9001:2015 Certified and is committed to work with stakeholders to provide facilities for technological, professional and scientific education for the industrial development of the country. We are proud to be the first TVET institution to Export Engineering Spare parts made in the college to the International market i.e. China.
