Signet Institute of Australia Partnership

Kabete National Polytechnic recently hosted an intensive week of competency assessments under the Signet Institute of Australia programme, bringing together trainees and trainers from five Kenyan TVET institutions in a step towards strengthening skills development and international training standards. A total of 133 trainees, supported by around 33 trainers, took part.

As part of the programme, Kabete served as the national assessment centre for three areas: Brick and Block Laying, Ageing and Disability Support, and the Diploma in Community Services. The Nairobi National Polytechnic hosted Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology and Automotive Diesel Engine Technology, while The Eldoret National Polytechnic hosted Wall and Floor Tiling.

The assessments were structured around Australian training standards, with an emphasis on what trainees can practically do rather than theoretical knowledge alone — reflecting the growing importance of competency-based training in preparing graduates for the workplace. Australian Master Trainers from Signet Institute worked alongside Kenyan trainers and assessors throughout, giving both sides a chance to exchange expertise and compare approaches to competency assessment.

At Kabete specifically, trainees in Brick and Block Laying demonstrated practical construction skills, those in Ageing and Disability Support were assessed on competencies for supporting people with diverse care needs, and Diploma in Community Services trainees were assessed on the practical application of their training within community service settings.

The week-long exercise demanded close coordination among trainees, trainers, assessors and institutional teams, and showed that Kenyan TVET institutions can host and take part in assessments benchmarked against international standards. For the trainees involved, it was an opportunity to put their training into practice within an assessment framework connected to international qualifications. Its successful completion at Kabete marks a milestone in the polytechnic's ongoing collaboration with Signet Institute of Australia, and in the role international partnerships play in preparing Kenyan TVET graduates for a changing global labour market.
