Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a structured process that allows individuals to earn formal recognition for the skills, knowledge, and competencies they have gained through work experience, informal training, or everyday life. Through RPL, these competencies are assessed against the standards of a specific qualification, enabling eligible individuals to work toward certification without having to repeat what they already know.

In Kenya, the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) oversees the coordination, standardization, and quality assurance of all qualifications awarded, including those attained through RPL. The Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) supports the recognition of learning acquired outside formal education systems, making RPL an integral part of the national qualifications system.

RPL serves multiple purposes and is beneficial in various contexts, including:

  • Gaining entry into learning institutions
  • Advancing in the workplace
  • Earning credits toward a qualification
  • Personal and professional development
  • Enhancing mobility and employability
  • Boosting self-esteem through recognition of competencies

Benefits of RPL

  • Increased Access: Offers an alternative pathway to formal qualifications for individuals with practical experience.
  • Recognition of Skills: Validates knowledge and abilities acquired through informal or non-formal means.
  • Career Progression: Enhances opportunities for employment, promotion, and professional growth.
  • Time and Cost Saving: Reduces the need to undergo training in areas where skills have already been mastered.

Kabete National Polytechnic supports RPL as part of our commitment to inclusive and flexible learning pathways, empowering learners from all backgrounds to achieve their academic and professional goals.
