Kabete National Polytechnic has a vibrant Guidance and Counselling Department. Its offices are located on a serene and secure environment on the southern border. It is run by competent and friendly staff. The department provides psychosocial support services to staff and trainees. This includes individual and group guidance counselling, orientation and adjustment guidance for new trainees and staff, capacity building for staff and peer educators on pertinent and contemporary issues, sensitization on gender mainstreaming and equality, and awareness creation on prevention and management of alcohol and drug use.
The department collaborates with stake-holders to undertake wellness programs such as, provision of voluntary counselling and testing to promote prevention and management of HIV/AIDS and campaigns to encourage the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases. We also work with Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority to provide the Kabete Community with opportunities to donate blood and save lives.
The department organizes motivational sessions facilitated by successful industry players to inspire trainees to remain focused and work towards achievement of their life goals.
Gender mentorship sessions are also done where male and female trainees have separate conferences. This equips them with skills, values and attitudes which help them to navigate the gender related challenges facing the youth to achieve academic success.
The department organizes activities to celebrate important days such as the international Women’s day and Valentine’s day. This empowers staff and trainees to develop high self-esteem and confidence which helps them to play their roles in social and economic development in the society in tandem with global themes.
The department also provides lactation space and child care services which are meant to support
trainees during learning and examination sessions. This leads to successful completion of training and
transition to the world of work.
